Workshop
In this workshop you will be briefly taken into the history of the ghironda in the Italian Peninsula, with the reconstruction of the lives of some players and their music. The practical part of the course deals specifically with the Piedmont’s traditional repertoire concerning both dance music and songs and their adaptation for the hurdy-gurdy. Francesco will approach it from a modern playing perspective for the ‘coup’ techniques, dynamics and the way to build rhythms, working on the disassociation of the two hands and some expressions for the left hand.
Practice exercises will be proposed, advice on the style and material given for the next months to work with.
About Francesco Giusta
Francesco Giusta takes interest in the hurdy-gurdy at the age of 11. He later improves and develops his technique with master players such as Patrick Bouffard, Gregory Jolivet, German Diaz, Thierry Nouant, Stephane Durand, Valentin Clastrier, Matthias Loibner and Tobie Miller.
Since the beginning his main focus has been pointed towards the traditional repertoire of his region first and the French folk music afterwards, analysing and understanding the structures and languages of those genres applied to the dancing scene.
He has played in several bands, mainly within folk and medieval music, and has been to many folk and medieval festivals in Italy, France and Germany; he recorded some CD’s with his bands as well as being a guest in several works of other groups. In 2015 he won the first price at the hurdy gurdy ‘solo’ competition in the ‘Le son continu’ festival in Chateaux d’Ars, France getting the title of ‘Maître sonneur’.
Since 2011 he has been giving masterclasses in several European countries and giving lessons in his hometown. He now plays with Trigomigo and has regular hurdy-gurdy classes in Turin and Germany.

Workshop
Sunday 23rd May
The hurdy-gurdy experienced a veritable renaissance in 18th century France, and was a fashionable instrument at court and amongst the nobility, resulting in a plenitude of repertoire for the instrument, both for the enjoyment of the noble amateur, as well as for the virtuoso professional player. The variety of repertoire spans everything from the simplest pieces for beginners and dillitants, to very complicated works to be performed by the greatest players of the day, providing us with a repertoire of several hundred compositions for the instrument.
This workshop is aimed at traditional or modern hurdy-gurdy players with little to no experience in the performance practice of Baroque music, and will give an introduction to this genre. Topics covered will include notes inégales, basic ornamentation, principles of articulation (left and right hands), and some of the elements of baroque style and how they differ to traditional playing techniques. Some exercises and sheet music will be given in advance. Participants should use a C-G tuning (ideally at least one high g’ chanterelle), and the pitch for this workshop will be A=415 (i.e. one semitone lower than 440).
About Tobie Miller
The Canadian hurdy-gurdy player, recorderist and singer, Tobie Miller, grew up in a family of classical musicians. After studies in Early Music Performance (B.Mus) at McGill University (Montreal, Canada), she moved to Basel (Switzerland) to pursue postgraduate studies at the prestigious Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (Aufbaustudium Diplom with High Distinction, 2008, and M.A. Musical Pedagogy, 2012). In 2011-2012 she worked on the baroque hurdy-gurdy and transcriptions of J.S. Bach’s solo cello and violin repertoire for the same instrument. A CD of this same programme was released in 2018, on the Raumklang label (Bach: solo).
Currently based in Basel, Tobie continues to perform and record both as a soloist and with numerous ensembles including the Ensemble Baroque de Limoges, Les Musiciens de Saint Julien , Per Sonat , Le Miroir de Musique, Leones and her own ensembles, La Rota and Ensemble Danguy, currently with two CDs: “La Belle Vielleuse” released in 2017 on the Ricercar label, to critical aclaim and (Chedeville/Vivaldi’s “Saisons Amusantes”) released in early 2019.
One of the only hurdy-gurdy players to come to the instrument through early music, she is recognized as a virtuoso of the baroque vielle à roue, and performs in various formations, including in duo with the Austrian player Matthias Loibner, as well as with well-known conductors such as Jordi Savall, Christophe Coin, and Wieland Kuijken. While maintaining a busy performing career, she also teaches regularly at workshops and festivals including the Over the Water Hurdy Gurdy Festival (2005-2010), Les Journées de La Flûte à Bec (2006), Asociación Ibérica de la Zanfona (2010, 2015), Sherborne Early Music Society (2015), and at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (2008, 2012). In 2015 she was the invited soloist for the 11th International Zona da Zanfona festival in Galicia.

Workshop
Along with his last outstanding album Osmose for electric hurdy-gurdy, Greg Jolivet has also recently recorded a solo album with traditional tunes from his region (Vielle à roue; Musique traditionnelle du Berry, published by AEPEM). This workshop will deal with this music and complementary aspects: context, repertoire, rhythms, dissociation and groove for the right hand, ornamentation for the left hand, subtle melodic variations…
It will draw attention to the swing (how to make the instrument vibe) and work on various tempi. The music proposed comes from the department of Cher (Bourges, Sancerre, Vierzon, Mehun-Sur-Yèvre) and a bit of the Indre department (where Greg lives, near to that special place which is Saint Chartier!).
The style is close to the Bourbonnais one but with noticeable differences for a trained ear. The tunes chosen come from collections of fiddle, bagpipe and some hurdy-gurdy players such as Georges Simon or Laurent Bitaud with a reference for the style.
Greg will be subtle and minimalist to find a breath to exhale the emotion of a melody… and try to keep it!
About Grégory Jolivet
Grégory Jolivet has been playing the vielle à roue for 30 years. He started at the conservatory of Bourges with Laurent Bitaud. For the last 20 years, he explores the alto hurdy-gurdy, and come back to the soprano for different repertoire. His passion in arts is to explore all kind of music styles and compose music for dancing, electroacoustic experimentation, musicotherapy and cinema.
He is been playing in recent years with various bands such La Machine, Blowzabella, Rue Pascale, Le Grand Barouf for dancing music and have touring extensively in Europe. He records a lot of albums, and he always curious about the expression of music and the emotion.
Grégory likes to take on new musical challenges and is constantly renewing himself. Thus, after having participated in the development of the prototype of the electric hurdy-gurdy Olive, he created along with Philippe Mousnier the Jolivette, a solid-body hurdy-gurdy withour a wheel to be played tapping with two keyboards.
After the 1997 Alt’o Solo album, he has recorded two new albums on his own in the last year: Osmose with an electroacoustic instrument and Vielle à roue; Musique traditionnelle du Berry with a traditional berrychon D alto hurdy-gurdy and a copy of a Louvet G-C baroque instrument.
